Celebrate Sa Pobla in Barcelona |
Visitors will want to book their villas in Spain for January with one of the biggest and most fun-filled events in Barcelona. On January 16th, the Majorcan district of Gracia celebrates Sa Pobla, a tribute to the patron saint of animals San Antoni. Despite the festival being about animals, they are notable by their absence from the event, which in true Spanish style, celebrates with food. Open fires are danced around by dressed up devils while onlookers eat a pastry like brioche with a rich meat filling. It is an event designed for people to let their hair down, with much partying and frivolity late into the night. Drummers beat a large bass drum called a zambomba while people dance and enjoy the entertainment. Although the weather is not as warm as in the summer months, it is by no mean as cold as much of the rest of Europe, meaning it can be enjoyed with little chance of rain or exceptional cold.
