Driving holidays 'proving popular' this year |
Nearly 12 million Britons are set to embark on their villa holidays and other trips throughout Europe and the UK this year by driving, according to research.
Cutting costs and avoiding the usual stress of travelling appear to be the main motivations behind this trend, with 22 per cent of the respondents to an AA survey saying they are planning a driving holiday for the financial benefits.
Two thirds of the respondents to a previous AA poll said they had cut down on expenditure due to the high costs of fuel, but this does not appear to be affecting interest in driving holidays.
Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans, said that people are "being smart with their money when booking holidays".
He added: "If taking your car on holiday, give the car a check over, make sure your tyre pressure is correct for the load you are carrying, stick to speed limits and use your air-conditioning sparingly - this will make a big difference to how much you spend on fuel."
People from London are the most likely to see driving as a less stressful way of embarking on villa holidays and other trips, with 33 per cent of respondents from the capital expressing this opinion.
