Faro airport could be expanded |
There could be more flights available in the future to carry people on their villa holidays in the Algarve as the result of expansion plans at Faro airport, according to reports.
An environmental impact study is already thought to be underway on an 18.5 million (£14.6 million) project to develop facilities at Faro airport by 2012.
The consultation has been deemed necessary owing to the airport's proximity to two sites of ecological importance the Ria Formosa park and the Rede Natura 2000, the Portugal Resident reports.
If the expansion is given the green light, Faro airport will have the capacity to increase its number of hourly flights from 22 to 30.
Faro airport is the main gateway to the Algarve for people embarking on villa holidays in the region, with regular flights available from a number of airlines based in the UK.
The municipality of Faro itself is a popular tourist destination, with areas for visitors to explore including the old town, the marina and miles of beachfront.
