Rome prepares for marathon |
Holidaymakers staying in villas in Italy in March may get the opportunity to experience the incredible spectacle of the Rome Marathon.
While the race itself may not be for everyone, the atmosphere and excitement that is generated throughout the Italian capital is something that can be enjoyed by all.
The race, on March 16th, begins at the Piazza Venezia, close to the Roman Forum, and finishes at the city's famous Colosseum, not far from the beginning of the course.
Along the way, runners pass landmarks including the Piazza di Spagna, Saint Peter's Square, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain.
The Rome Marathon has been a traditional part of the city's sporting calendar throughout the 20th century.
Among the most notable years in the race's history is 1960, when Abebe Bikila won the Olympic Marathon after running barefoot.
In 2007, a new record was set as 12,078 people finished the Rome Marathon, including 51 disabled athletes.
