Rome prepares to host Masters |
Sports fans enjoying villa holidays in Rome in May could get the chance to take in a major event at the Foro Italico.
Between May 3rd and 18th, the best players in world tennis will descend on the Italian capital to take part in the Rome Masters.
This competition is seen as the world's second most prestigious clay court tennis tournament, after the French Open, and in the past has crowned such high-profile winners as Pete Sampras, Bjorn Borg, Martina Hingis and Steffi Graf.
Spanish sensation Rafael Nadal has dominated the men's competition for the past three years and will be back again this year to show that he is the world's best on clay.
Jelena Jankovic won the women's tournament in 2007 and this year will be competing against the likes of Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin to retain her title.
The two halves of the Rome Masters are played separately, with the men's final being contested on May 11th and the deciding game in the women's competition taking place on May 18th.
